Tooth decay Is the most common childhood disease in the United States. Prevention Starts at birth.

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood. Over 16 million U.S. children have untreated tooth decay, which equates to more than 25% of children between two and five years old and 50% of those between 12 and 15 years old.

Of the four million children born in the U.S. each year, over half will have cavities by the time they reach second grade.

American children miss more than 750,000 school days (57 million school hours!) each year due to dental conditions. That's more missed school days than are caused by the flu every year.

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride-containing toothpaste. Preferably, brush after each meal and especially before going to bed.
  2. Clean between your teeth daily with
  3. dental floss or interdental cleaners, Such as the Oral-B Interdental Brush,Reach Stim-U-Dent, or Sulcabrush.
  4. Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacks. Avoid carbohydrates such as candy, pretzels and chips, which can remain on the tooth surface. If sticky foods are eaten, brush your teeth soon afterwards.
  5. Check with your dentist about use of supplemental fluoride, which strengthens your teeth.
  6. Ask your dentist about dental sealants (a plastic protective coating) applied to the chewing surfaces of your  back teeth (molars) to protect them from decay.
  7. Drink fluoridated water. At least a pint of fluoridated water each day is needed to protect children from tooth decay.
  8. Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exam.

(2)What Causes Tooth Decay

We all have germs in our mouths — some good and some bad. The bad germs and bacteria cause cavities.
Germs and bacteria can be spread from parents/ caregivers to infants and toddlers through saliva.
(Do not share cups, eating utensils or food, and don't "clean off" pacifiers by putting them in your own mouth first.)

  • Sweet or high-carbohydrate foods or sweet drinks feed the germs that cause decay.
  • The germs make acids. The acids cause tooth decay. Tooth decay can be stopped if it is caught early.
  • Regular brushing with fluoridated toothpaste  removes the germs. Fluoride helps stop the cavity-causing acids
  • Tooth decay can be stopped if it is caught and treated early.

The surgeon general calls tooth decay the single most common chronic childhood disease five times more common than asthma and seven times more than hay fever.

42% of kids age 8-13 say they are worried about getting cavities from eating too much halloween candy. Only 44% of US children brush their teeth twice a day.

(3)Tooth Decay baby tips

(4)Prevent Baby Tooth Decay

Did you know frequent exposure to sugary drinks, including baby formula and milk can lead to baby tooth decay? Protect your baby's teeth using  these tips.

• Avoid giving milk or juice at bedtime. Use water or a pacifier as good alternatives.
• Avoid sugary drinks in general and limit juice and other beverages to mealtimes.
• Transition to a drinking cup as soon as your child is able.
• Mom's should avoid sharing anything that would transfer cavity causing bacteria including cups, spoons, toothbrushes, etc.

(5)Oral Hygiene for Babies

  1. Before the first tooth erupts, you can begin  practicing good oral hygiene on your baby's mouth.
  2. Schedule an appointment with a children's dentist when your baby's  first tooth comes in.
  3. Gently wipe down your baby’s gums with a soft, damp washcloths.
  4. After age 1 brush your baby’s teeth with pea-sized non flurode toothpaste until he or she is old enough to hold the brush.

(6)Home remedies for tooth decay and cavities with salt and clove

Clove

• Dilute 2 to 3 drops of clove oil with 1/4 tsp sesame seed oil. Put a few drops of this solution on a cotton ball and dab the solution on the affected tooth. Repeat every night before going to bed.
Salt

• Dissolve 1 tsp salt in a glass of warm water. Swish a mouthful of this solution around in your mouth for 1 min, concentrating on the affected tooth. Follow this treatment 3 times a day until your symptoms subside.

DID YOU KNOW...

TOOTH DECAY IS THE NUMBER ONE CHRONIC INFECTIOUS DISEASE AMONG CHILDREN IN THE U.S.)

Many parents are surprised to learn that tooth decay can begin as early as age 1. Children with tooth decay are far more likely to develop immediate and long term oral health issues, including pain, infections, difficulty speaking, problems eating food, tooth discoloration and even tooth loss.

But with the help of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, you can join the Monster-Free Mouths Movement and keep your child's mouth free of creatures like Tartar the Terrible, Ginger Bite-Us and Tooth D.K. Below are important tips to help kids have monster-free mouths—at all ages

(7)BIRTH-2 YEARS OLD:

  1. Before teeth erupt. CLEAN YOUR BABY'S MOUTH AND GUMS with a soft cloth of infant toothbrush at bath time. This helps prepare your baby for the teeth cleaning to come.
  2. If your baby is given a bottle when going so sleep, use NOTHING BUT WATER Bottles containing any sugary liquids or carbohydrates such as milk formula or fruit juice, put teeth under attack from bacterial acid all night long.
  3. NEVER DIP A PACIFIER IN ANYTHING SWEET, that pesky Tooth D.K. can show up.
  4. Take your child to see a PEDIATRIC DENTIST by his or her FIRST BIRTHDAY. Your dentist can help you establish a daily regime. provide recommendations and determine your next visit.
  5. Talk to your child's pediatric dentist about The RIGHT AMOUNT OF FLUORIDE for your child. Ask if your child should be brushing with toothpaste that contains fluoride and/or Í your Child needs a fluoride supplement.
  6. Take your child to see a pediatric dentist |by his or her first birthday to establish a DENTAL HOME Your dentist can help you establish a daily regimen, provide recommendations and determine your next visit.

(8) 2-5 YEARS OLD:

  1. Remember to brush your child's teeth at least TWICE A DAY once in the morning and once at night. The most important time to brush your child's teeth is RIGHT BEFORE BEDTIME.
  2. Schedule dental visits EVERY SIX MONTHS so keep away Mouth Monsters, especially she dreaded Tooth D.K.. I he routine teeth Cleanings at regular check-ups help remove pests like Tartar the Terrible and Ginger Bite-Us.
  3. Sucking on a thumb, finger and pacifier can affect your child's teeth the same way: sucking for prolonged periods of time may cause the upper front teeth to tip outward or not come in properly. Most children stop this habit on their own; if not, try to DISCOURAGE IT BY AGE 3 or ask your dentist for other creative ideas.
  4. Keep an EYE ON SNACKING—ideally children should have no more than three snacks a day.
  5. Parents can begin FLOSSING for their Children when any two teeth are touching.
  6. AVOID JUICES which literally bathe teeth in sugar. Try to limit the amount of juice you give to your child to less than 6 oz. per day.

(9)SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN:

  1. Parents should supervise the brushing of teeth for school-aged children until they are SEVEN OR EIGHT YEARS OLD.
  2. When teeth are touching, it is time to BEGIN FLOSSING. Ask the pediatric dentist for tips on flossing your child's teeth.
  3. In addition to brushing and flossing your child can CHEW GUM WITH XYLITOL, a Non-sugar naturally occurring substance, To simulate saliva flow which helps to clean the mouth just make sure to ask the teacher).
  4. Remember to protect your child's teeth with a mouthguard when they participate in physical activities, including sports and leisure activities, Consult your child's pediatric dentist to determine which type of mouthguard is most appropriate for your child.
  5. AVOID CARBONATED BEVERAGES which can erode enamel on teeth; sport drinks and juice pouches are also bad for teeth as they keep acid levels high—which the Mouth Monsters like.

  2. Are dental sealants covered by dental insurance plans? I'm sure that most procedures are. However, I just want to make sure that this one is, because I cannot afford a high co-pay right now.

  3. Thanks for posting this guide for preventing tooth decay. My child is going to start teething soon, so knowing how to take care of his teeth will help him have a healthy smile in the future. Wiping down his gums with a soft, damp washcloth seems like a good tip to know. That seems like a good way to help keep his gums healthy while his teeth are growing. Thanks for the tips!

  4. Cavities are hard to protect against and it can be hard to prevent as well. I know that when I become a parent, I really want my kids to brush well. That way they don't have to deal with teeth problems. It might also be smart to talk to my dentist about other ways to protect young teeth.

  5. Excellent advice that was given about using dental floss in order to prevent tooth decay. This type of issue is what my grandson is actually dealing with at the moment. From what my son tells me is that he's only been brushing his teeth but, not flossing his teeth.

  8. Thanks for explaining how I should prevent tooth decay in my school-age children. They've been getting more cavities this year, so I'm hoping to learn what more I need to teach them about taking care of their teeth. They have been drinking more soda recently, so maybe cutting down on it will help. You're right about how the high acidity and sugar content of soda would rot their teeth, so I'll try to cut it out of their diet while promoting drinking water instead.

  25. I've heard that it good to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, like you mentioned. Fluoride increases the re-mineralization process in your mouth. Your teeth are in a constant state of flux and if you don't take care of them d-mineralization and decay will rise. http://www.mammothspringdental.com/familydentist
