What should I possibly pay attention to when choosing the mouthwash?
Normal oral hygiene does not require mouthwash. In our practice, however, we have many patients who like to use a mouthwash every now and again, for example because they smoke or like the fresh taste.
From a dental point of view, there is nothing wrong with the occasional or longer use of commercially available oral water. However, one should be aware that with every application, foreign substances are introduced into the oral cavity that do not really belong there.
In addition, mouthwashes do exactly what they should: they pretend a pleasant taste. This impairs self-awareness. Thus, a pathological taste or bad breath may not be properly perceived.
But especially with bad breath should always searched for the cause and this be treated. Finally, behind bad breath eg inflammation in the mouth or diseases of the stomach stuck, which should be treated as early as possible and should not be covered.
Completely different from the oral fluids available on the market, is the long-term use of prescription chlorhexidine mouthwash . Since this substance is quite aggressive and correspondingly prolonged use of side effects can be expected, chlorhexidine-containing mouthwashes should only be used for a short time (not longer than 2 weeks).
