The oil has not only an antibacterial effect, but is also supposed to whiten the teeth naturally. Completely without any harmful effect.

But what is the purpose of these claims?

In this article, I will not only focus on scientific studies, but also describe the right application & my personal experience with coconut oil in dental care and how brushing teeth with coconut oil works.

The benefits of coconut oil

On the Internet, coconut oil has been a trend for a long time - it is not only used as a healthy food for cooking, but is also recommended for healthy dental care.

Some claims it as alternative of conventional toothpaste.

All the hype about the coconut oil strated with a study from 2012 . This has found that coconut oil helps against caries-causing bacteria. Although there have already been individual studies, the antibacterial effect has been demonstrated for the first time.

Since then, every pro-coconut oil product has referred to this investigation.

The promised advantages at a glance

In addition to the prevention of tooth rot, other advantages are mentioned:

  1. Oil pulling should provide whiter teeth
  2. Coconut oil should help against mouth odor
  3. The oil improves general dental hygiene
  4. There are 2 different ways of using.

On the one hand, the oil is recommended as toothpaste substitute on the basis of the above study and on the other hand as mouthwash (oil extraction). Let us thus divide the two applications.

First, I go to the question of whether coconut oil can replace the good old toothpaste.

Coconut Oil as a toothpaste replacement: That is what scientific studies say

The fact is, the scientific study from above has clearly shown that coconut oil helps in caries prevention .

The researchers found quite clear evidence of the positive effects of coconut oil.

That's why coconut oil is good for the teeth

The antibacterial effect is because of the lauric acid contained in coconut oil which acts against the bacterial species Streptococcus mutans (steptococci) and the harmful yeast fungus Candida albicans . According to researchers from the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland, the oil acts as a natural antibiotic and could be increasingly used in the future.

The toothpaste can not be replaced by the coconut oil

It is worth mentioning, however, that the researchers currently do not recommend a regular use of coconut oil in dentistry - certainly not as a substitute for the proven fluoride toothpaste.

The positive results for coconut oil come from only 1 single study.

However, the effect of toothpaste with fluoride-containing toothpaste has been confirmed over decades and in many different studies - and is recommended by dentists and institutes worldwide. According to the current state of science, the use of  toothpaste offers clearly best protection against tooth diseases.

Moreover, it is not yet clear how strong the positive effects really are.

Even in my article, I have found, for example, that chewing gums can have a positive effect on the teeth - but they are not a substitute for proper brushing.

This is also the case with coconut oil.

It can have positive effects, but at the moment we do not know very much about it. Just because some substances reduce the bacterial cover does not mean that caries is combated thoroughly enough.

The oil is just a supplement

So be skeptical if someone recommends the use of coconut oil as a complete alternative to toothpaste. This does not have much to do with the scientific factual situation.

Here, you should definitely wait for more independent studies on the subject.

I personally would consider coconut oil only as a supplement to normal dental care. As a small experiment it can certainly not hurt to try out the coconut oil once (I have done just that and describe my experiences below).

In the best case, the oil really helps against caries and in the worst case you simply spend half a minute more in front of the mirror - but still brushing your teeth.

As long as the rest of the tooth hygiene is correct, a bit of testing certainly does not hurt. In addition to the antibacterial effect against caries, coconut oil should have other positive effects.

It is also used as an mouthwash:

Coconut oil pulling provides these advantages

If you believe the numerous advisers on the Internet, the oil helps especially against yellow teeth.

So-called oil-pulling

  1. Remove unsightly stains
  2. A bright white smile

For this reason, oil extraction, especially in Eastern medicine, enjoys a long tradition and has been used there for more than 1000 years.

What is oil pulling at all?

When oiling, a small amount of coconut oil is flushed back and forth in the mouth. Not only the interstices are cleansed, but all kinds of germs are also bound.

The whole thing works similarly to the application of normal mouthwashes and improves the general dental hygiene.

However, the oil pulling takes much longer. While conventional mouthwashes should not be used for more than 30 seconds, most sources on the Internet recommend about 15-20 minutes for oiling.

There are positive effects

In some scientific studies, the coconut oil successfully reduced inflammation of the gums. Dentists can also benefit from this method - as long as it is used in addition to normal dental hygiene.

The Coconut oil:

  1. Reduces gum infections
  2. Combats harmful bacteria
  3. Can improve oral hygiene
  4. Trying out can be worthwhile.

Brushing teeth with coconut oil

It is even more difficult to answer the question whether the oil-pulling also helps against yellow teeth and other discolouration.

The antibacterial effect of the coconut oil naturally reduces harmful plaque, which can be responsible for the yellow color. In this case, coconut oil can help.

According to my own experience, this is especially helpful in the case of unhealthy, sugary nutrition - that is, exactly when the yellow teeth develop in the short term and you do not suffer permanently from it. Usually bacteria and foodstuffs are the cause of discoloration (and the coconut oil reduces it).

Does coconut oil help with mouth odor?

Coconut oil can also help with unpleasant odors - as long as bacteria in the oral cavity are the cause.

In addition to the coconut oil extraction, interdental brushes and mouth showers can also help to clean the food from the interstices (there are particularly stinking bacteria).

So let us note that coconut oil can have a lot of positive effects - as long as the rest of the dental care is right. It is certainly not a miracle, but rather an interesting supplement, which you can try out with dental problems.

After all the research, I also wanted to make my personal experiences with coconut oil. So I grabbed a high-quality version and tried it myself.

Proper application of coconut oil in practice

In the following I will describe my personal experiences with the application

  1. As toothpaste
  2. As mouth rinse

And then conclude a final conclusion.

In order to find a suitable oil, there is first a small overview of the various coconut oil variants.

Are all oils equally good?

No, there are significant differences between the individual products. Normal oil from the supermarkets is often refined and highly heated in large factories, so many valuable ingredients are destroyed.

Often, additional substances are added in the same step in order to increase their shelf life.

Best cold-pressed coconut oil from the mill

Personally, I would only use cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil (also known as virgin oil). In the trade, such variants are difficult to find apart from health food, which is why I recommend buying on the Internet.

I chose this organic version of the oil mill Solling * , because it is very high-quality processed. On Amazon, however, there are also many other vendors - best to search for coconut oil.

In addition to dental care, you can also use this oil for many other purposes:

  1. As a high-quality food for cooking
  2. As a care product for stressed hair
  3. For natural, chemie-free skin care

That is why I recommend a product which is as natural as possible, which does not use additives.

Use as toothpaste

In summer:Pour a little liquid coconut oil on the toothbrush and brush.

The coconut oil then foams up and you almost feel like you are cleaning with a normal toothpaste. Personally I like the taste.

What to consider in winter

In winter the whole thing looks different. Coconut oil solidifies as soon as the temperature drops a little. Then you have to scrape the fixed oil and wait until it melts in the mouth.

Personally, I find it annoying. However, You can place the oil tank briefly on the heater. however, I can not say whether the durability and the substances contained in it suffer from it.

The application of coconut oil as mouthwash

If the oil is used as a mouthwash.

When using coconut oil as mouthwash -  simply take a suitable amount of coconut oil into your mouth.

Rinse the oil in the mouth and make sure that all teeth come into contact with the oil.

In the beginning 5-10 minutes are enough, professionals expand "the treatment" on up to 20 minutes (that is to bring the best effects).

At the end simply spit out the oil (do not swallow!).

That's it done.

Conclusion: My experiences with coconut oil

After I experimented with coconut oil for about 1 month, I could not personally find any cosmopolitan differences. However, I also pay much attention to my dental hygiene and do not have to deal with a lot of problems.

My gums may feel slightly less irritated, and perhaps the teeth have become a little whiter because of coconut oil.

BUT:

The "experiment coconut oil" was very interesting to me. And since the side effects are limited, I recommend it to all who have a few minutes a day. But you should not expect miracles.

Neither are they scientifically proven, nor have I been able to confirm them in personal practice tests. In case of doubt, you should first improve your general dental hygiene before you can rely entirely on coconut oil.

What other alternatives for healthy teeth are there?

Dentists recommend daily brushing as the absolute minimum. In many cases, however, much more care is needed.

Electric toothbrushes and sonic toothbrushes facilitate hygiene significantly. They take a lot of manual work and can improve your own health noticeably. Even with discolored teeth I can only recommend them, because they usually clean more thoroughly than a normal brush.

Clean the surfaces between the teeth

However, Even the best toothbrushes do not reach between the teeth spaces so a daily cleaning is very important , because countless bacteria accumulate in the gaps. This favors caries and mouth odor.

There are various possibilities for cleaning:

  1. Interdental brushes
  2. Dental floss
  3. Mouthwash

Which of these variants is best for you depends entirely on your own needs.

Any of these can improve the oral hygiene noticeably.

In addition, you can also look at different tongue cleaners , dental care mousses and mouthwashes .
